Convertors improve bandwidth usage

RAD Data Communications introduced a pair of interface convertors that reduce the cost of connecting routers and switches to E3 and T3 services. The RIC-E3/ETH and RICT3/ETH interface convertors are priced attractively lower than other solutions on the market. The convertors support both enterprise and carrier/ISP applications.

"The growth in demand for LAN access to E3 and T3 services is driving many organisations to look for cost-effective means to connect their routers and switches to the broadband networks", says Ramon Horkany, Product Manager at RAD Data Communications.

"The RIC-E3/ETH and RICT3/ETH are engineered at a price point several thousand dollars below the alternative of a high cost E3/T3 router module or ATM access device", he added.

A common method used by carriers to extend their networks to areas lacking wireline infrastructure is the use of wireless E3/T3 links.

"Our new interface convertors offer carriers a simple, low-cost solution for transporting LAN traffic over wireless E3/T3 links between POPs, instead of installing expensive ATM access devices between the LAN and the radio link", states Horkany.

RAD's new convertors also help Internet service providers (ISPs) to cut costs of expensive equipment, such as high-volume router interfaces, in their POPs.

The RIC-E3/ETH and RIC-T3/ETH convertors allow connection to the router's Ethernet port rather than an expensive E3/T3 port, resulting in substantial cost savings across the ISP's network.

"Another key advantage of our product solution is that it ensures that customers will be able to make full use of their E3/T3 bandwidth.

The RIC-E3/ETH and RIC-T3/ETH achieve 94.5-99.75% bandwidth usage of the E3/T3 link, without the heavy overhead associated with packet or cell-based technologies", explains Horkany.
