Access unit extends ISDN over E1 networks

RAD Data Communications has introduced the FCD-E1A access unit, an integrating multiplexer for voice and data traffic over E1 or Fractional E1 links. The FCD-E1A is an enhanced version of the FCD-E1 access unit. One of the major enhancements in the FCD-E1A is the addition of four optional ISDN BRI S-interfaces in place of one of the dataports.

The ISDN interface ports enable the carrier to support extension of ISDN services over traditional E1 (TDM) networks.

"This means that carriers no longer need to maintain and operate separate E1 and ISDN networks to transport ISDN services", states Izi Amado, FCD Product Line Manager at RAD Data Communications.

The FCD-E1A can be supplied with an optional ISDN dial-up backup interface, which supports automatic switchover to the ISDN network in the event of a failure on the E1 link.

"This is a cost-effective backup solution since, in contrast to E1 lines, the customer pays for the ISDN circuit only when it is being used", adds Amado.

In the enterprise market, there is a growing need for connecting LANs in remote locations and creating VLANs for dedicated workgroups.

In order to address these requirements, RAD has added high performance Ethernet bridging and IP routing capabilities to the FCD-E1A, enabling it to extend or segment LANs over E1 links.

This functionality can be used to support LAN-to-LAN and VLAN applications, eliminating the need for a separate router.
